Free AI certificates, compared
Several well-known courses are no longer free, and most certificates record that a video series was finished rather than that anything was learned. Checked in September 2026.
§ 1 — Disclosure
The Council publishes this page and its own credential is one of the five compared. The columns were settled before the rows were filled in, and the Council’s entry loses the course columns outright, because there is no course to complete. Read it with that in mind.

§ 3 — The distinction
Completion against assessment
This is the distinction most comparison lists skip, and it decides what any of these is worth to somebody reading a CV.
A course certificate records completion. The good courses teach well and the certificate is a fair record of having worked through one. What it cannot do is tell an employer that the material was absorbed, because nothing tested that.
An assessment-based certificate records that a stated standard was met under controlled conditions. That is how professional credentials have always worked: learn wherever you like, then sit the same assessment as everybody else. It says less about the journey and more about where you arrived.
Neither is better in the abstract. They answer different questions, and the strongest position is to hold both, which costs nothing at all if the course and the assessment are each free.

New to AI, and want to understand it
Elements of AI. Thorough, free, genuinely non-technical, and the certificate costs nothing at the end.
Use AI daily, and want to use it better
The AI Fluency material. Its four competencies are practical enough to change how you work this week, and two of them are about evaluating and owning the output.
Want something a recruiter can check
An assessment-based credential, because a completion record cannot carry that weight however good the course behind it was.
Need something role-specific
None of these. Free certificates are general by design. An examined certification in your own field is a different instrument and costs accordingly.
§ 5 — Warnings
Three things to watch
- Free that means a free trial. Check whether the certificate at the end needs a subscription that the course did not.
- Certificates that never test you. If it can be earned by pressing play, a recruiter knows that too.
- Claims of legal compliance. No certificate discharges an organisation’s duty under any AI law, and a provider willing to say otherwise has told you something about their other claims.

Frequently asked
Is Google AI Essentials still free?
No. It requires a subscription, and has for some time, though a large number of "free AI certificate" lists still carry it. The course itself is sound; it is simply not free, and it is not needed for the Council’s assessment.
What is the difference between a course certificate and an assessment?
A course certificate records that you completed a course, and an employer has to take on trust that you absorbed it. An assessment records that you met a stated standard under controlled conditions. Both are useful and they are not the same claim. The strongest position is to learn from a free course and then prove it independently.
Why is the Council’s own certificate in this comparison?
Because leaving it out would be worse. It sits in the same table on the same columns, it loses the course column outright since there is no course to complete, and the comparison is worth reading only if the columns were chosen before the winner was.
Can a free certificate prove legal compliance?
No, and be careful with any that suggests otherwise. No certificate discharges an organisation’s duty under the EU AI Act or any comparable instrument. A credential can be evidence that a measure was taken. It is not a finding of compliance, and no private body can make one.
