AI Literacy Certificate
For hiring
Comfortable with AI tools now appears on almost every CV and tells you almost nothing. This is a free way to check the claim, with nothing to buy and no candidate data to process.
§ 1 — The problem
Self-reported AI skill is hard to read
A candidate who uses an assistant every day may still trust its arithmetic, paste customer data into a consumer tool, or be unable to say why a summary left out the clause that mattered. Those three gaps are where incidents start, and daily use does not close any of them. It often widens them, because volume without checking produces more work that nobody verified.
The difficulty is that fluency and literacy read identically in an interview. Both candidates sound comfortable. Only one of them has been tested on what to do when the output is wrong.
§ 2 — Three uses
Where it fits in a process
In the advertisement
A line such as "AI Literacy Certificate preferred, free and takes 30 minutes" signals what the organisation cares about and filters for candidates who follow through. Preferred rather than required: the credential is a baseline, and requiring a baseline excludes people who would clear it.
At shortlist
Ask shortlisted candidates who do not hold it to sit it before the final interview. It costs them nothing, takes an afternoon including preparation, and gives you one benchmark across a shortlist instead of five differently-worded claims.
In the interview
Use the certificate as the floor and spend the interview above it. Three questions that separate fluency from judgement:
- Tell me about a time an AI tool gave you a wrong answer. How did you catch it?
- What would you never put into a public AI tool in this role, and why?
- If AI drafted an analysis and it turned out to be wrong, who is accountable?
The first is the most revealing. A candidate who has never caught an AI error has either not been checking or has not been using these tools on anything that mattered.

If you need a role-specific technical test, a paid platform is still the right instrument and this does not replace it. For a common baseline across every hire, a portable credential is simpler and costs nothing.
§ 4 — Verifying
Half a minute
- 1.Ask for the identifier. It begins AIAC-L.
- 2.Enter it on the public register.
- 3.Check the name against your candidate, and note the issue date.
Many holders display the credential on a profile with the verification link attached, which takes you to the same register entry without the intermediate step. A profile badge with no working link behind it is worth exactly what it looks like.

Frequently asked
What does it cost us?
Nothing, and nothing to the candidate either. There is no employer account, no per-candidate fee and no platform to buy. You are asking for a credential the candidate already holds or can obtain free.
Can we require it?
You can ask for it, and many employers list it as preferred rather than required. Requiring any credential narrows a field, and this one is an awareness baseline rather than a measure of ability to do a job. Treat a pass as a floor and interview for the judgement above it.
How do we check one?
Ask for the identifier, which begins AIAC-L, and enter it on the public register. You will see the holder, the credential, the issue date and the current status. No account, and no need to contact the candidate again.
Does a pass mean somebody can do the job?
No. It means they understand what these systems are, why outputs can be confidently wrong, what must not be pasted into them, and who carries the decision. That is a baseline worth establishing and it is not a substitute for assessing the work itself.
Do we receive candidate data?
None. Verification is a lookup against an identifier the candidate gives you. The Council does not tell you who searched, and does not tell you anything the register page does not already show.
